Dancing with the moon
The Moon’s influence on the Manta
'Full moon manta's' is a phrase commonly thrown around in Coral Bay as being an epic day for manta swims. I always found it fascinating that the lunar phases had an effect on manta behaviour, and chalked it up to be a spiritual connection (I suppose the desire to make reason of things is what has created much of our folklore). However there is infact science to explain this (during particular seasons). The illumination of the full moon influences food production, whilst the pull and push of the moon influences tidal flow that helps with dispersal of larvae. There are many ecological factors at play here, the end result being large pockets of food drawing mantas in to feed. Hence in this way, the mantas dance with the moon.
