Kareo Dede and the Boy
A tale of the God’s Fish
In the waters of Flores, an island near Komodo, the people of Labuan Bajo honor the whale shark as “Kareo Dede” - the god’s fish. Legend speaks of a young boy Kareo, abandoned by envious fishermen after his bounty outshone theirs. Left to the mercy of the rising tides, Kareo faced the brink of death. But from the deep, a Whale Shark emerged, carrying him home. As it carried him through the vast, shimmering sea, it revealed the hidden, sacred wonders of the ocean, filling his heart with the magic of the deep.
This image captures a Whale Shark swimming through the clear blue waters of the Ningaloo.
